I
do not advocate breeding hybrid macaws!
That is NOT what this site is about.

Hybrid
Macaws are not rare & endangered, nor are they a species.
The
names we assign to hybrid macaws are not recognized taxonomic
descriptions.
A more accurate way to refer to them would be by their actual
species combinations, such as Ara ararauna x Ara macao, along
with the hybrid generation, if known. I occasionally receive
emails requesting the names for various combinations of hybrid
macaw offspring that may not have a "common," aka;
agreed upon, or "slang" name presently in usage.
Some will invent a name and assume it will catch on. Such
is not necessarily the case. You will run across different
names at varying times for the same macaw hybrid, such as
Milihy, or Milicinth, for a Hyacinth x Military macaw (or
Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus x Ara militaris.)
A related,
but less common, macaw hybrid is the Hyacinth x Buffon's (Anodorhynchus
hyacinthinus x Ara ambigua), sometimes referred
to as an "Emerald" Macaw. Up until just this past
year, or so, you could pick up a Milihy Macaw for under $1,000.
(I know of a veterinarian who did less
than 2 years ago.) Recently, I learned of someone
acquiring a Milihy for a much larger sum of money. To go along
with the dollar figure paid, he is calling it an "Emerald."
This implied status symbol, or trophy, is just conspicuous
consumption. Why would one very similar looking hybrid macaw
be so much more acceptable than another? How vain to be so
driven to impress our fellow man! What about the life, &
beauty of the bird?
Is that not good enough?
Sadly,
and in part thanks to the popularity & visibility of this
website, which inadvertently & unintentionally glamorized
the hybridization of macaws , a virtual "Cult of Hybrid
Macaw Proponents, & Followers" has crept into aviculture,
like a low grade infection. Fortunately, for reasons of both
conservation & ethics, it is not necessarily chronic,
nor will it become mainstream. Hybrid, aka; Designer Macaws
cycle in & out of fashion and have been a trend in recent
years. Presently, increasing awareness of global health, ecological
balance, and a greater respect for the intelligence &
biosystem of Mother Earth are taking precedence, for as a
result of our selfish & persistent interference, we now
face our own grim future.
Beware of avian fashionistas, ones determined to sell you
on a hybrid macaw based on extraordinary & trumped up
claims as to their rarity & desirable attributes. The
novelty will wear off, especially if you were unprepared for
what all living with a large macaw entails.
